DESCRIPTION

Along with active camper engagement, the Christian Educator will collaborate with the Rockhaven Camp and Retreat Center Director to plan and organize daily and weekly devotions, and lead outdoor worship elements of camp programming. The Christian Educator will work to create meaningful, creative, relatable, and unique experiences for campers, including leading music or recruiting staff to sing or play musical instruments for worship. This person will also serve as a resource for fellow summer staff, offering assistance and mentorship to counselors and offering a compassionate and attentive ear when they encounter challenges. Specific responsibilities may vary based on the camp week and group size. The Christian Educator will work closely with the Camp Director and will play a crucial role in overseeing the overall camp experience and ensuring a positive and enriching environment for both campers and staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Use storytelling skills to captivate campers and convey meaningful narratives. Strong ability to plan and lead engaging activities and discussions for children and youth. 
  • Adapt and creatively implement the Inside Out camp curriculum to align organically with Rockhaven’s existing camp structure. Demonstrate confidence in selecting and applying relevant components of the curriculum. 
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with campers to understand and address their spiritual and emotional needs.
  • Serve as a resource for the Assistant Director in helping any camper struggling with camp life. Including campers who need help transitioning to new activities, campers experiencing a large emotion, campers struggling socially, and campers with differing identities and abilities who are seeking support. 
  • Lead a positive and cohesive team environment among Rockhaven Counselors. Engage fully in camp activities, including meals, games, and special events, to model enthusiasm and community spirit. Embody the values and spirit of Rockhaven.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols to ensure the well-being of campers. Ensure adherence to camp policies and regulations. 
  • Foster an inclusive camp environment for ALL campers.

Qualifications 

  • Must be 21 years + with experience working in a camp or outdoor ministry setting.
  • Genuine enthusiasm and passion for working with children of all ages. Demonstrate respect for their unique ways of learning, behaving, and communicating. 
  • The ideal candidate should exhibit a high level of maturity in decision-making and adaptability to changing camp environments and schedules.
  • A strong personal commitment to Christian faith and values, with the ability to articulate and share your faith with others.
  • Effective organizational and multitasking abilities. 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to build positive relationships with campers, staff, and parents. A friendly, approachable, and authentic demeanor.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. 
  • This role involves spending a significant amount of time outdoors. Candidates should have the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Applicants should be physically capable and willing to participate in hiking activities. 
  • Must be able to engage young children in faith formation appropriate to age. A commitment to the Christian faith and to Rockhaven as a ministry of the First Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Desired Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s and/or pursuing Master’s degree in Christian education, theology, ministry, education, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 
  • Past experience in the PC(U.S.A.) denomination. 
  • Undergraduate or graduate-level religious studies experience. 
  • Experience in emotional crisis management.
